Matt Byrd and Kate Showers met years ago just before their first year at college. A week before classes started at Clemson, Kate met Matt through a mutual friend. When she walked into class on the first day, she noticed Matt in the large physics lecture hall and sat next to him for the rest of the semester. After a few weeks, Matt asked her out to dinner. Four and half years, official girlfriend/boyfriend status, and an engagement ring later the couple got married at St. Henry Catholic Church.
Matt proposed to Kate by taking her back to where it all started in Clemson, South Carolina. What Kate thought was just a fun trip to see family, friends and football turned into a very special trip with the love of her life. The day after the football game, Matt woke Kate up and took her on a walk around the campus. The legend is that if you walk through the rotunda in President’s Park with your significant other, you will be destined to be married. Once there, Matt got down on one knee and asked Kate to marry him.
“It was a special moment because it caught me by surprise, but also because there was no one else around. We were able to spend the next hour with each other and called family from out of town to spread the news. That was not the only surprise Matt had planned though. Right around 11 o’clock Matt insisted that we start walking again. We headed to a restaurant in downtown Clemson where family and friends were gathered to celebrate brunch with us,” Kate said.
The couple used a lot of DIY decorations in their wedding decor and it was those thoughtful touches that made their wedding so special. Kate’s college roommate made a wooden string art sign with the couple’s new initials. Matt’s parents gave the silver goblets from their wedding to the couple to use for the toasts. The couple also had wedding photos from their grandparents and parents weddings displayed. It was a perfect day spent with friends and family.
